CHAPTER 28

RACHEL

His lip was split, but I’d stopped tasting blood a long time before he’d kissed me against a lamppost while we waited for the car. He kissed me in the back seat with his hand between my legs, pressing against the seam of my jeans. We were a raging twist of hands and lips.

This was a bad idea, overall.

The adult side of my brain knew that we were entering some kind of hormone-fueled phase where putting me in a wedding dress was going to complicate what could be a normal relationship progression. But I didn’t have much practice listening to the adult side of my brain. Not where men were concerned. Not with him pushing me against the wall by his front door and my legs wrapping around his waist.

All those years, Sebastian hadn’t had a dick. In my mind, he’d been a friend. A sexless male of the species. And now my entire world revolved around the hard length under his jeans.

He got the door open with his fingerprint or a code or something I couldn’t see through the kissing and the groping. We tumbled into his apartment and landed on the floor, rolling around like we were on fire. He kicked the door closed, cutting off the light. A lamp by the side table went on automatically. Reaching under my shirt, he got under my bra, and when he touched my nipple and then gently and expertly squeezed it . . . I released a metric ton of arousal into a thick groan. He sucked in a breath and looked down at me.

I reached for his belt buckle, fingers brushing his hard bulge.

“I need to tell you something,” he said, taking his hand off my breast.

“I’m on the pill.” I pulled the leather through the loop.

“Not that. Thank you, but not that.”

“Later.” I yanked the hook out of the notch and was about to slide leather against metal when he licked the bloodless split in his lower lip, and I knew he meant it.

“Tell me.”

“I want to tell you two things. You’re so . . . so everything. I don’t know if I’ll make it past the first.”

“One thing.” I held a finger in front of his face. “Then we do it.”

“One thing.”

“Okay, go.”

He bowed his head so I couldn’t see his face.

“I’ve never . . .”

I waited, but he didn’t finish. I waited more. Nothing. He kept his head bent down.

“Seb?”

Up on his elbows, he made a couple of hand gestures that may have meant that whatever it was, wasn’t a big deal. Nodded. Seemed to go from dismissal to a death knell to admitting a momentary lapse of judgment.

“Tell me later,” I said.

“I never . . .”

“Whatever.”

“Did it.”

“It?” I knew what he meant. There was only one “it,” but I needed confirmation.

“It. The thing. Sex. The complete, consummated act.”

Knowing what he’d meant by it didn’t keep me from being caught between disappointment and shock.

Disappointment, one, because he’d put the brakes on a nicely speeding train.
